From its debut in 1983, the 956 immediately dominated Group C racing . Using a development of an unused Indycar engine project, the car's blend of fuel efficiency and aerodynamics proved almost unbeatable. From the outset Porsche sold numerous chassis to privateers ensuring close racing - and a range of arresting colour schemes!
Due to the introduction of new IMSA regulations in 1986, Porsche redesigned the 956 with a shorter nose section and longer body so that the drivers feet now were behind the front axle-line. Now called the 962, the car remained extremely competitive with much newer designs from Jaguar and Sauber Mercedes until the late 80's.
Tamiya, Hasegawa and Revell all released 1/24 kits of the car in the 1980s, with Tamiya actually producing kits of both variants.
Over the last few years, I have used all these kits and a range of specialist decal producers to build up a collection of ten 1/24 Porsche 956s and four 962s.
More recently MFH have issued the 956 in 1/12 scale - and I have built this as well!
